You ever look at a picture of you and think somethin’ is a little… wrong with your smile? You don’t know what it is. Your two front teeth looks fine, so what is it? The secret could be the two teeth right next to them. This paper is a guide to the helper teeth of your smile: the lateral incisors. I will show you why these “sidekick” teeth is so important. And how knowing what they do can be the way to get the happy, pretty smile you always dreamed of.
Let’s start with the first things. You can’t fix a problem if you dunno what it is. Your four front teeth on the top and bottom is called incisors. The two big ones in the middle are the “central incisors.” Everybody notice them. They are the movie stars of your smile. But the teeth next to them is the “lateral incisors.” Think of them like the best sidekicks in a movie. They don’t have the main part, but the whole show don’t work without them.
You got four lateral incisors all together. Two on top, two on the bottom. The ones on top are the most important for how your smile look. They are a little smaller than the central incisors. They are also a little more round. This little difference in size and shape is what make a smile look real and not like fake teeth.
Their main job is helping you cut food when you bite. They work together with your central incisors. But I’m telling you, the job they do for your looks is just as important. When they are the right shape and size, they make your smile look nice and smooth. When they’re not, it’s the first thing that can make a smile look “wrong.”
It sounds like a big deal, I know. Build the smile? But when you get what they do, it makes a lot of sense. I remember a dentist friend of mine told me it this way. He said, “Bob, the central incisors are the big front doors to a house. But the lateral incisors are the windows next to them. If the windows are too small or not straight, the whole house looks weird.” That picture has stayed in my head.
Your lateral incisors are what make the curve of your smile. A great smile follows the curve of your bottom lip. This is called the “smile line.” The lateral incisors are a big part of this curve. They are the change from the big, flat central incisors to the pointy canine teeth beside them. They make the whole look softer and create a nice balance.
There is even an idea with numbers in cosmetic dentistry called the “golden proportion.” It sound hard, but it’s not. It just means there is a size thing between the front teeth that our eyes think looks pretty. The lateral incisor should look about two-thirds as wide as the central incisor. When this size is right, your smile looks even and real. When it’s wrong, your brain sees it right away, even if you don’t know why.
I bet you did. You’re watching a movie or talking to a person and you see their smile. It’s not a bad smile. But something about it just don’t look right. You can’t tell what’s wrong. The teeth are white. They are straight enough. So what is it? I’ll tell you a secret. Next time this happens, stop looking at their two front teeth and look at the teeth right next to them.
A lot of times, the problem is the lateral incisors. Maybe one is way smaller than the other. Maybe one is turned or sits farther back. Maybe they are too pointy or too short. It’s a little thing. But it changes it all. It messes up how the smile looks.
This is a normal problem I see a lots of times. People come to me not happy with their smile. They think they need to fix their two front teeth. They put all their time and worry on the “stars” of the show. I have to softly tell them that the real problem is with the “sidekicks.” Once they see it, it’s like a light turns on. They see that a little change to a lateral incisor can make a big change to their whole face.
When your lateral incisors ain’t right, it can do more than just make your smile look a bit weird. It can make you feel bad about you. You might hide your smile in pictures. You might cover your mouth when you laugh. This ain’t just about how you look. It’s about feeling good enough to show you’re happy to everyone.
Think about the problems. If your lateral incisors are too small, they can make weird spaces between your teeth. This can make your smile look like something is missing or even like a kid’s smile. If they are pushed back or crooked, they can make dark shadows in your smile. This makes your teeth look not as bright and clean.
If your lateral incisors are too pointy or “fang-like,” they can mess up the nice curve that makes a smile look good. This can make you look meaner, which might not be your personality at all. The size, shape, and spot of these two little teeth decides how your whole smile feels. Getting them right is how you get a smile that looks warm, friendly, and happy.
You might of heard of this. A “peg lateral” is a lateral incisor that didn’t grow right. It often looks small, short, and shaped like a cone, like a little peg. If you have one of these, you’re not the only one. It’s a thing a lot of people are born with. I met many people over the years who was born with one or two peg laterals.
The problem with a peg lateral is it really messes up the flow of your smile. It’s like having one tiny window on a house where a normal window should be. It makes you look right at it and breaks the smile’s nice curve. It can also leave a big space between the central incisor and the canine tooth. Food can get stuck there and it’s hard to clean.
Many people with peg laterals feel very shy about them. They tell me they spent their whole lives trying to smile without showing that part of their mouth. The good news is, this is one of the easy problems to fix with today’s dentistry. It’s a perfect time where a little change can make a huge difference in how you look and feel.
Yeah, it really can. Being born without one or both of your top lateral incisors is another thing many people have. For some people, the baby tooth don’t fall out because there is no adult tooth to push it. For others, the baby tooth falls out and leaves a big space you can see. This is a much bigger problem than just an empty spot.
A missing tooth don’t just look bad. It starts a lot of other problems. That empty space lets the teeth next to it start to move. The big central incisor can start to move over and lean. The pointy canine tooth can move forward into the space. Soon your whole smile is crooked and your bite is all wrong.
This can give you more problems later, like pain in your jaw and problems chewing. A missing lateral incisor can also make your smile look caved in and older. It’s a problem with the whole structure that hurts the health and look of your whole mouth. If you have a missing lateral incisor, fixing it should be something you do right away.
Okay, we talked enough about the problems. Let’s get to the good part: the fixes. You don’t have to live with a smile you don’t love. Today’s dentistry has some great and easy ways to fix problems with lateral incisors. If your tooth is too small, the wrong shape, or gone, there is a great choice for you.
The most used fixes are cosmetic bonding, porcelain veneers, and dental crowns. For a small chip or a tooth with a bit of a wrong shape, bonding might be all you need. This is when a dentist puts a putty that matches your tooth color right on your tooth and shapes it with his hands. It’s quick and easy.
For bigger changes, like fixing a peg lateral or changing the color and shape of a tooth, veneers or crowns are mostly the best idea. These are custom-made fixes that give you a great look. And if the tooth is all gone, a dental implant is the best choice to replace it. Let’s look at these choices a little more.
This is a great question and one I get asked a lots. Picking a veneer or a crown depends on how healthy your tooth is and what you want to get. Both are great ways to change a bad tooth into a perfect one. They are both made by good workers in a dental lab.
A porcelain veneer is a very thin cover that is glued to the front of your tooth. Think of it like a new face for your tooth. It’s the perfect fix for a peg lateral or a tooth that is crooked or the wrong color. The dentist only has to take off a little bit of the front of the tooth. A good veneer lab can make a veneer that look so real, nobody can tell it’s not your real tooth.
A crown is different. It’s a full cap that covers the whole tooth, all the way to your gums. A crown is a better choice if the tooth is very small, broke, or has a big filling. It makes the tooth stronger. A great crown and bridge lab will work with your dentist to make a crown that matches your other teeth perfect and makes your smile look balanced again. Your dentist will help you pick which one is best for what’s wrong with your tooth.
If you are missing a lateral incisor, there is one fix that is way better than the others: a dental implant. I have seen myself how a dental implant can totally change a person’s life. It’s the closest thing we have to growing a new tooth. It’s a fix that lasts forever and looks pretty.
Here is how it works, in easy words. A small metal post is put in your jawbone where the tooth root was. Your bone will grow onto this post, making a really strong base. Then, a custom-made crown is put on the post. An expert implant dental laboratory will make this crown to perfect match the color, shape, and size of your other teeth.
What you get is a new tooth that looks, feels, and works just like a real one. You can eat with it and you can smile with it and feel good. Best of all, an implant keeps the other teeth from moving and it keeps the bone in your jaw healthy. It is really the best thing to do for a healthy and pretty smile for a long time.
You feel excited? You feel hopeful? That’s great! The first step on your path to a better smile is very easy. It’s time to have a chat with your dentist. This is not a choice you have to make by yourself. Your dentist is your helper in this.
Make a meeting just to talk about what you want for your smile. Tell your dentist what you don’t like about your smile. Show them the teeth that bother you. Your dentist will listen. They will take pictures and x-rays. They might even use a cool special camera to make a 3D picture of your teeth.
From there, you and your dentist can make a plan. They will tell you all your choices, from bonding to veneers to implants. They will tell you the good things and bad things of each one. They will work with you to find a fix that is good for your health, what you want, and how much you can pay. Taking that first step and making that appointment is the most important thing you can do. It’s the start of something good.
